FLi Sci Scholars Program

The first pilot program born out of FLi Sci was the FLi Sci Scholars Program, a paid research fellowship program that ran during the Fall 2019 academic semester.

7 ambitious high school students interested in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) were selected for the inaugural fellowship that met weekly to discuss topics related to science and prepared and presented a culminating research proposal.

We recruit 20-30 students during the spring semester. Does this sound like something you might be interested in? Please check back shortly for the application!

Program Overview

The FLi Sci Scholars Program is a research fellowship experience targeting high school students that amplifies their curiosity and interest in pursuing a career in science.

Create a research proposall or design and present to cohort

Read and write scientific papers

Use the scientific method to explore their own questions

Analyse and interpret experimental data

Work on hands-on research projects with graduate mentors

Aligned with our core values, the purpose of the FLi Sci Scholars Program is not to identify and recruit students with early markers of academic success based on grades or test scores — though we do hope you apply! — but instead to inspire students to continue their pursuit of a scientific career in college and beyond. For that purpose, FLi Sci Scholars will engage in curriculum that emcompasses the following elements:

Educational

FLi Sci Scholars will develop skills that are integral to acquiring and thriving in science research. Scholars will also learn tips related to college and graduate school admissions (e.g., PhDs or MDs) to develop early plans to succeed when it comes to applying for these programs.

Experimental

FLi Sci Scholars will have the opportunity to do a mini-research project and present to their cohort. Scholars will also engage in regular journal club to critically examine empirical literature and even participate in workshops hosted by science professionals both in academia and industry.

Personal

FLi Sci Scholars will participate in discussions and activities that aim to combat invisible barriers to accessing science (e.g., imposter syndrome). In addition to building relations with other students in their cohort, FLi Sci Scholars will also have the opportunity to engage and meet with current scientists.

Eligibility

Students applying for the FLi Sci Scholars Program must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a current high school student (9th – 12th grade)

      • Must be either the first generation in your family to attend college OR be low-income

      • Must have at least a 2.0 GPA

      • Must attend a high school with little to no opportunities to participate in other research fellowship

      • Must not currently be working as a research assistant

      Criteria

FLi Sci seeks to identify and evaluate applications based on the following factors:

      • Current interest in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM)

      • Embodies some or all Our Core Values
      • Need to participate in a research fellowship based on either the quality of their high school program or by geographical location

A special thanks to our previous funders for providing a generous grant to pilot the program!
